Do not Throw Paper in the Toilet

Why Do i See This in Greek Toilets?
Plumbing Infrastructure
Greece, especially in older buildings or islands like Kos, has narrow and fragile sewer pipes—often just 50mm wide. These pipes weren’t originally designed to handle anything other than human waste. Flushing toilet paper can easily cause blockages, leading to plumbing problems for the entire building.
Building Age and Design
Many buildings in Greece (especially in tourist areas) were constructed decades ago. Retrofitting these buildings with modern plumbing is costly and complex, so they rely on older waste systems that can’t handle toilet paper like newer systems elsewhere in Europe or the US.
The Bin Next to the Toilet
Instead of flushing paper, you're expected to throw it into the small covered bin next to the toilet. These bins are emptied daily, especially in hotels and apartments, and are part of standard hygiene practices in the region.
Is It Just Toilet Paper?
Usually, the sign refers to all kinds of paper—toilet paper, wet wipes, tissues. Even "flushable" wipes often don't break down quickly enough and can still cause clogs.
At Koasis Apartments
If you're staying at Koasis - Augmented Smart Boutique Apartments, you’ll also see this notice. While the apartments are fully renovated in 2025, we still respect the local sewage system's limitations. Please use the provided bin for paper to help us keep everything running smoothly and avoid any inconvenience during your stay.
